Texting as a Way of Life
While reading Hall’s Mark post “When Machines Rule the World,” I found striking similarities between her texting philosophy and mine own.
Hall’s Mark and I share the same distain for talking on the phone. I am not sure where my aversion to the phone came from, but I do prefer exchanging e-mails or text messaging. With a text or e-mail, I control when I read them and when I respond. Phone calls at times can be intrusive and hard to ignore. As Hall’s Mark states, “If you want to talk to me, you best bet is a text,” and I completely agree. I was trying to remember when texting became a large part of my life.
In college, AOL’s AIM was all the rage. At any given time, I could log on to my computer and learn where my friends were and what they were doing. Today, I never use AIM — I text. I never really though about why I abandoned using AIM, until now. Texting affords me a portable way of contacting people. Now, I know that many phones come equipped with AIM, but I rarely use it.
As I write this post, I wonder if some new technology will emerge in the next few years that will replace my texting lifestyle but for I don’t see it going anywhere — and my dad just texted me.
